From Inquiry to Gallery: Setting Expectations for Couple Sessions
A couple session can feel effortless in the final gallery. Behind those images is often a photographer who made the experience clear before anyone stepped in front of the camera.
Start at the inquiry. Tell clients what the session includes: how long it lasts, how many locations and outfit changes are realistic, when they can expect their gallery, and what they’ll receive. If they have an elaborate idea, talk through the time it would take before booking it as a standard session.
Once they book, ask how they want the photographs to feel. Do they picture a quiet morning at home, a dressed-up night out, or something in between? Find out whether either person has concerns about being photographed. Ask how comfortable they are with public affection, especially if you’re planning to shoot somewhere busy. Their answers can shape the location and your prompts.
Explain how much direction you give. Some couples worry they’ll be left to pose themselves; others fear every minute will feel staged. Let them know what a typical session looks like: you’ll guide them into good light, offer simple things to do together, and make space for natural moments.
A few days before the shoot, send the practical details. Confirm the meeting spot, parking, timing, weather plan, and anything they should bring. If there’s walking involved or nowhere private to change, say so. These small details make it easier for clients to arrive ready to enjoy themselves.
After the session, follow through on the gallery date and delivery details you promised. Explain how to download, share, and print their images. A beautiful gallery matters, but so does the confidence clients feel at every step leading up to it.
Clear expectations give a couple one less thing to think about. That leaves more room for them to be together—and for you to photograph what happens.
