Gear Talk: What You Actually Need vs. What Instagram Makes You Think You Need
Let’s be real: if you’ve ever scrolled through Instagram and felt low-key attacked by the “What’s In My Camera Bag” reels, you are not alone. According to social media, you apparently need:
✔ 3 full-frame mirrorless bodies
✔ 7 lenses “you’ll totally use every day”
✔ A $500 camera backpack
✔ A drone
✔ A light meter you aren’t even sure how to use
✔ And of course… a perfectly styled flat lay of it all on a white duvet 🌿✨
But here’s the truth 👇
Great photographers don’t rely on gear. They actually know how to use what they have.
So let’s break down the difference between what you actually need and what Instagram tries to convince you is “essential.”
📸 The Real Essentials (for 99% of photographers)
✅ One reliable camera body
✅ One versatile lens (35mm, 50mm, or 24-70mm)
✅ Extra battery + memory cards
✅ Basic editing software (Lightroom, Capture One, etc.)
✅ A way to back up your photos
✅ Light (natural, reflector, LED — whatever fits your style + budget)
That’s it. Seriously. You can build a career, a portfolio, and a recognizable style with this.
🛒 The “Nice to Have, but Definitely Not Required”
➖ Second body (for weddings or paid gigs where failure is NOT an option)
➖ Specialty lenses (macro, telephoto, tilt-shift, etc.)
➖ On-camera or off-camera flash
➖ ND filters, prisms, etc.
➖ Drone (cool, yes — but also $$$ and not always legal to fly)
These things can level up your toolkit when you’re ready, not because a reel said you “need to upgrade.”
🚫 The “Instagram Made Me Buy It” Gear
❌ $2,000 lens that does what your $300 lens already does
❌ 15 camera straps because “aesthetic”
❌ A suitcase full of presets you’ll never use
❌ That cube-shaped light you bought just because it was in a flat lay
❌ A camera bag that looks cute but breaks your back
If the gear isn’t making your work better, saving you time, or making you money — it’s probably just clutter.
🔑 The REAL Glow-Up Isn’t Gear — It’s Skill
📖 Learn your camera
🎯 Master composition & light
🧠 Know your WHY behind every shot
🎨 Build your editing style
🤝 Connect + collaborate with people
Gear enhances your work — it doesn’t define it.
💬 Let’s Talk: What’s the one piece of gear you bought because Instagram made it look “essential”… and now it lives in a drawer?
Drop it in the comments. We’re laughing with you, not at you. 😅
